The Faces & Places of History

Charlie Parker - Traveling Musician & Man of the Times

Young Charlie Parker came of age as a man and musician in the 18th and Vine area. After Charlie’s parents separated in 1930, he and his mother Addie moved to a two-story brick house at 1516 Olive Street, just blocks away from 18th and Vine.

Why We're Doing This

Publicly accessible resources about the history of 18th & Vine are surprisingly limited. We’re building this virtual experience to change that. We want to create a living, interactive repository that honors the district’s legacy and makes it accessible to anyone, anywhere.

As Kansas City continues to evolve, whether it be economically, socially, and culturally, it’s vital that we don’t lose sight of where it all started. 18th & Vine isn’t just a historic district; it’s the birthplace of movements, music, and culture that shaped the soul of the city and inspired generations beyond its borders.

In a world constantly focused on what’s next, it’s easy to overlook what came before. That’s exactly why we’re pressing pause, looking back, and building something that ensures the stories, voices, and vibrancy of 18th & Vine aren’t just remembered… they’re experienced.

Our Supporters

The progress thus far has not been done alone, we have an incredible community of supporters & partners who have allowed us to get this far. Thank you to each and every one of them!

A Call to the Community
